Walter T Johnson didn't just decide to promote boxing one day — he earned his place in the sport over nearly three decades. Starting as a licensed judge and referee in 1998, working ringside in North Carolina, he learned every dimension of the game from the inside out.

By 1999 he was matchmaking and promoting, building Walter Johnson Promotions into one of the most active boxing operations in North Carolina. Over 27 years, he has put on 72 events at some of the region's most prominent venues — from the Greensboro Coliseum to the LJVM Coliseum, the Benton Convention Center, and beyond.

Where most promoters see boxing as a business, Walter sees it as a community. His events have featured Pro and Amateur fighters, given rising talent their first real cards, and brought world-class boxing to audiences that otherwise wouldn't have access to it.

Today, Walter T Johnson Promotions continues to grow — expanding its reach through live streaming, social media, and on-demand content, making every fight accessible to fans near and far.

Scored 7 professional bouts on a single card at The Ritz, Raleigh, NC on December 12, 1998. Worked alongside referees Kenneth Woods, Scott Francis, and Stanley Wright.

1999

Licensed Referee

Refereed 7 bouts including the April 23rd card at Greensboro Coliseum and a full card at Academy Kickboxing, Garner, NC on January 30, 1999.

1999

First Promoted Event & First Matchmaking

Launched Walter Johnson Promotions and made his first card as matchmaker at the Bi-Lo Center, Greenville, SC (August 7, 1999). Promoted multiple events at Greensboro Coliseum through the year.

2000–2011

Building the Brand

Consistent annual cards at Greensboro Coliseum and the Coliseum Complex. Expanded to LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem and venues in Raleigh. Established WTJ as the go-to promotion in the Piedmont Triad region.

2012–2019

Peak Promotional Activity

Most active period — multiple events per year at Marriott Downtown, The Ritz (Raleigh), Hive Basketball Academy, Benton Convention Center, and the Greensboro Coliseum. Brought amateur talent to the forefront alongside seasoned pros.

2023–2025

Next Gen Era

Returned to high-frequency promoting with cards at Triad Basketball Academy and the National Guard Armory. Headlined the Next Gen Boxing event at Coliseum Complex (March 2025) — positioning WTJ for the streaming era.
